Fall is one of the best seasons in Santa Cruz — warm days, fewer crowds, spectacular sunsets. It’s also the perfect time to take care of your home before winter arrives. Here’s your fall homeowner’s guide.
ENERGY EFFICIENCY: YOUR FALL CHECKLIST
Weatherization
- Inspect and seal weatherstripping around doors and windows. Gaps waste significant energy.
- Check for drafts around outlets, light switches, and pipe penetrations in exterior walls. Seal with foam or caulk.
- Inspect attic insulation. Inadequate insulation is one of the biggest sources of energy loss in older Santa Cruz homes.
Heating System
- Schedule your furnace or heat pump servicing before you need it — HVAC technicians get busy in October.
- Replace your air filter (do this monthly if you have pets).
- Clear registers and vents of furniture and obstructions.
Water Heater
- Set your water heater to 120°F — hot enough for safety and cleanliness, not so hot it wastes energy.
- If your water heater is more than 10 years old, start researching heat pump water heaters — they’re far more efficient and California rebates make them increasingly affordable.
Roof and Gutters
- After the first fall winds, clear gutters and downspouts of leaves and debris.
- Inspect your roof for damaged or missing shingles before the rainy season.
Exterior
- Check your driveway and walkways for cracks that could worsen with winter rain.
- Disconnect and store garden hoses.
- Trim trees and branches that could fall on the house in a storm.
SANTA CRUZ FALL FUN
Fall in Santa Cruz means apple picking in the mountains, Halloween at the Boardwalk, harvest festivals in Aptos and Watsonville, the beginning of whale watching season (humpbacks and gray whales are often visible from shore and on boat tours), and uncrowded beaches that locals reclaim after the summer crowds leave.
The Fungus Fair in January is one of the most beloved local events — a celebration of Santa Cruz County’s remarkable mushroom diversity. Fall is also the beginning of the best surfing season at Steamer Lane.
If you’re new to the area, fall is the ideal time to explore — the weather is perfect, the crowds are manageable, and the community events calendar is full.
