Moving is consistently ranked among life’s most stressful events. But with the right plan, you can make it far more manageable. Here are 10 pro tips to take the chaos out of moving day.

Start Early

Begin packing non-essentials 6–8 weeks before your move date. Pack one room at a time and label every box clearly with contents and destination room.

Purge Before You Pack

Moving is the perfect time to declutter. For every item you’re unsure about, ask: “Would I pay to move this?” If not, donate, sell, or toss it. Less stuff = lower moving costs and less unpacking.

Book Movers Early

Good moving companies book up fast, especially in summer. Get at least three quotes and read reviews. Book 4–6 weeks in advance if possible.

Create an Essentials Box

Pack a box (or suitcase) of items you’ll need immediately upon arrival: toiletries, phone chargers, a change of clothes, snacks, important documents, and medications. Keep it accessible — not on the truck.

Take Photos of Electronics Setups

Before you disconnect any TV, computer, or entertainment system, photograph the cable connections. You’ll thank yourself during setup.

Protect Your Valuables

Keep jewelry, important documents, and irreplaceable items with you rather than on the moving truck. Don’t risk it.

Notify Important Parties Early

Update your address with the post office, bank, employer, insurance companies, DMV, and subscriptions. Do this at least two weeks before the move.

Measure Before You Move

Check that large furniture will fit through doorways and into the new space. Nothing is more frustrating than discovering your king bed frame doesn’t fit through the bedroom door.

Set Up Kids’ and Pets’ Spaces First

Help children and pets adjust by setting up their spaces early. Familiar items in their new environment reduce anxiety for everyone.

Do a Final Walkthrough

Before handing over keys, walk through every room, closet, attic, and garage. Check all appliances, light fixtures, and faucets. Make sure nothing is left behind.
